RTU Open kicked off with the blitz!

After months of waiting and preparing we are finally here – Riga Technical University Open has started! For the first time ever Festival began with a blitz tournament and with quite as success as 170 players from 23 countries participated.

The starting list was opened by Latvian GM Igor Kovalenko, rated 2718 in blitz!

Second seed was Rasmus Svane from Germany and third Babu Lalith from India. Interestingly, only the latter one managed to stay in top 5 at the end!

The tournament was dominated by Indian players, who took top 7 places! The spectacular winner is Shardul Gagare who scored 10/11, without a single loss, beating 5 grandmasters on his way!

First lady was Dinara Saduakassova from Kazakhstan, 20th ranked women player in the world! We are really proud to have in our tournament big stars of women chess also Elisabeth Paehtz, 21st ranked female player in the world and Irina Bulmaga, 31st player in the world participated in the blitz!

The youngest participants were 8 year old Latvian players – Ansis and Jekabs Kantans. They are also…brothers of GM Toms Kantans!

Always great to see young players being brave enough to take part in strong tournaments to gain experience!

Congratulations to all the winners and we hope everyone enjoyed the first day of RTU.

Today is rapid and on Monday we are starting classical tournaments!
